Our Story

Founded in 1977

Hayden leather products are crafted in a family-run workshop in Melville, New York. Founded in 1977, the Hayden factory has become the foremost leather bookbinder in America. Today, we are building on the skills of two generations of leather craftsmen to create functional, durable and beautiful bags, wallets and stationery items.

At Hayden, the traditional craftsmanship steeped into our factory floor is married with a tailored, modern sensibility in every single design. The Hayden man is prepared and confident. He takes notes on paper and texts when he is running late. His favorite bag is a little different than the others at the meeting. He is less concerned with trend and more interested in function, construction, and beautiful materials. He knows the right color when he sees it.

At Hayden, we believe that our favorite possessions are extensions of ourselves, developing the slow patina of our travels and our values. We make products that age with character and grace, becoming the tools we love and rely on. Hayden is defined by attention to detail, quality and integrity. Our customers are too.

Our Leathers

The old ways are still the best

When it comes to leather, we shun innovation. The old ways are still the best. We source our leathers from the world’s finest tanneries, primarily in France and Italy.

Hayden uses only full grain, vegetable-tanned hides. Vegetable tanning pre-dates ancient Mesopotamia and uses tannins from tree bark and other natural extracts. It remains the most environmentally safe form of tanning.

At Hayden, this slow process is stewarded by our expert tanners who nurture the deep hues that only nature and patience can create.

Over time Hayden leather develops its own character that you can see and feel. Your Hayden bag or wallet is a testament to the enduring value of quality materials and authentic craftsmanship.

Our natural grain leathers have not been sanded, buffed, or “corrected” to remove the marks that nature has made. The full fiber durability of the leather has been preserved and will develop a distinctive patina over time. Natural variation is a trademark of this distinctive leather, ensuring no two pieces will ever be the same.
